CD218 represents the ligand-binding chain, whereas IL-18Rβ is suggested to assist in the formation of a high affinity complex and mediates intracellular signals. IL-18R is expressed on a variety of cells including macrophages, neutrophils, natural killer (NK) cells, endothelial, and smooth muscle cells and an upregulated expression is observed on naive T cells, T helper cell type 1 (Tʜ1) cells, and B cells, in the presence of IL-12.
